Check when your vehicle needs inspection
MVPI says new private vehicles are first inspected three years after their first vehicle licence, followed by annual checks. Taxis, buses and public transport vehicles have a different initial interval of two years, then annual checks. Start with the correct vehicle category rather than applying a private-car rule to a commercial vehicle.
Check the current certificate before arranging registration-related work. Leave enough time to fix a defect and return if necessary. If the car has a serious fault, arranging an appointment does not make it safe to drive to the station; choose a suitable way to get the fault assessed.

Book through an official route
Open SASO’s periodic inspection appointment service and follow its current Start Service link. The public workflow asks you to choose booking, modification or cancellation, enter personal and vehicle details, select a centre and appointment date, then confirm. Save the final confirmation, including the station and vehicle details.
Both SASO’s service page and MVPI’s current website link to the periodic inspection system. Older pages may still show a Vehicle Safety address. Starting from the regulator or operator helps you follow the current destination instead of choosing an advertisement that looks similar.
Prepare the document set and the driver
MVPI lists appointment confirmation, the relevant identity record and vehicle registration among the documents to bring. Its FAQ accepts the registration licence, a Traffic printout or the digital licence; an imported vehicle needs its original customs card. Compare the plate and chassis details before travelling.
If another person will take the vehicle, confirm the applicable authorization route before the visit. MVPI lists platform authorization and several exceptions, including certain existing Absher authorizations and family or registered-user cases. Do not assume that having the keys is enough, or that every relative qualifies under the same exception.
Separate appointment booking from inspection charges
SASO labels its appointment-booking service free. That does not make the physical inspection free. The operator’s fee table distinguishes vehicle classes and a first inspection from a reinspection. At this review, MVPI lists SAR115 including VAT for a private-car inspection and SAR37.95 for the corresponding reinspection.
Use the current price for your actual vehicle category at the chosen operator. Keep the receipt with the result. A fee quoted for a motorcycle, truck or initial booking should not be used as the price of a private-car inspection.
Make the visit more useful
MVPI’s inspection information covers identity matching and technical checks such as tyres, lights, brakes, emissions and underbody condition. Before the appointment, a practical owner check is to make sure the vehicle documents match, the lights work, and obvious faults have been assessed. This does not predict the inspection result.
Let a competent repairer deal with safety faults. Keep receipts for work done, but do not treat a workshop invoice as a replacement for the official inspection. Follow staff directions at the station and retain the full report, including any failed items.
If the vehicle does not pass
MVPI’s FAQ says customers receive a report identifying failed items. Ask the station to explain an unclear entry before you leave. Its published reinspection rule allows two reinspections within 14 working days, with the relevant reinspection fee; after that window, a full inspection and full fee apply.
Give the repairer the actual failure report, then compare the repaired items with it before returning. Keep track of the working-day window instead of assuming that a repair booking pauses it. New defects may still be checked during reinspection.
If a pass is not visible in Absher
MVPI says inspection data is sent automatically to Absher, but mismatched vehicle details or technical issues can prevent it appearing. Compare the registration and inspection report. Its FAQ directs registration-record errors to Traffic and report errors to MVPI customer service. Keep the passed report while the record is being corrected; do not edit the report yourself.
