Distinguish the four Qatar MOI and Metrash workflows first

Many expatriates in Qatar run into avoidable rejections because unofficial guides group very different Ministry of Interior (MOI) procedures under one “Metrash family visa” label. Before uploading documents or paying fees, identify which exact service applies to your situation:

1. Metrash activation and National Address registration: Setting up your digital identity and registering your residential address with MOI—required before completing residency transactions. 2. Residence Permit (RP / QID) renewal: Extending an existing Qatar ID card for an employee or a family dependent already residing in Qatar. 3. Family Residence Visa: Sponsoring a spouse and children to live in Qatar long-term with their own QIDs. 4. Family Visit Visa: Inviting eligible relatives for a temporary stay, which does not grant a QID or work authorization.

1. Prerequisite: Metrash activation and National Address

To access personal residency and visa services in the official Metrash mobile app or on the MOI e-services portal, a resident needs a valid QID and a mobile number registered under that same QID with a local telecom operator (Ooredoo or Vodafone Qatar). If your SIM card is registered under another person’s ID or a company account, update the SIM ownership first or use smartcard login on the MOI portal.

Confirm that your National Address record is registered and current in Metrash (including zone, street, building number and accommodation contract details), as MOI residency and family-sponsorship services verify address compliance.

2. How to renew a Qatar Residence Permit (QID) in Metrash

Once a worker or dependent holds a Qatar ID (QID), the Residence Permit must be renewed on time. Under Qatar Law No. 21 of 2015 regulating the entry, exit and residence of expatriates, employers renew sponsored workers’ permits, while the head of family renews sponsored dependents’ permits. Ensure each person’s passport is valid and any required health insurance or medical check is active before starting.

  1. 1

Open Residency Services in Metrash or the MOI portal

Sign in to the official Metrash app or MOI e-services portal, open Residency, and choose Issue / Renew Residency.

  2. 2

Select the QID number and renewal period

Choose the individual QID (up to five family dependents can be selected in a personal transaction), select the permitted 1-, 2- or 3-year duration, and check that passport and health-insurance requirements are satisfied.

  3. 3

Choose Q-Post delivery and pay the official fee

Select whether to receive the new physical QID card via Qatar Post (Q-Post) or at an MOI service centre, pay the itemized government fee by card, and save the official receipt.

3. Applying for a long-term Family Residence Visa

Sponsoring your spouse and children for long-term residence in Qatar is evaluated by the MOI Expatriates Affairs Department against occupation, salary and housing criteria. The sponsor must hold a valid QID in an eligible technical or specialized (non-labour) profession matching their verified educational qualification and employment contract.

Hukoomi and MOI service guides require the sponsor to provide: an attested marriage certificate and children’s birth certificates (attested by the home country’s foreign ministry, the Qatar embassy or mission, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Doha, with certified Arabic translation where required), an attested employment contract, six months of bank statements from a recognized bank in Qatar showing consistent salary transfers meeting the current MOI threshold (or the applicable threshold where employer-provided family housing is documented in the contract), an attested tenancy/housing document, and a police clearance certificate for adult family members.

Submit the application under Visa Services in Metrash, upload clear colour scans of each document, and track the review status in the app. After the visa is approved and your family enters Qatar, complete the mandatory medical commission check, fingerprinting and health-insurance linkage within the stated entry period so their physical QIDs can be issued.

4. Short-term Family Visit Visa and timely extension

If you are inviting a spouse, child, parent or eligible relative for a short visit rather than permanent residency, choose the Family Visit Visa route in Metrash. Prepare the sponsor’s QID, proof of profession and salary/accommodation, the visitor’s passport (valid for at least six months), and official proof of relationship.

A family visit visa is issued for an initial short stay (commonly one month) and may be extended in Metrash up to the maximum duration allowed for the relative’s category only after meeting the required visitor health-insurance and medical examination conditions. Always check the exact visa expiry date in Metrash and complete any extension or departure before the authorized stay expires to avoid daily overstay fines.

Check live MOI requirements and avoid unofficial intermediaries

Salary thresholds, eligible professions, mandatory visitor health-insurance rules and fee discounts (such as online renewal reductions) are set by the Qatar Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Public Health and can be updated without notice. Verify the current document checklist directly in your authenticated Metrash app or on Hukoomi before paying for non-refundable flights.
